Friday 17th December 2021, will be the 35th Anniversary of Starship Overflow!
I still remember quite clearly, sitting in an armchair 2hrs before our first broadcast, with Tom the cat on my lap, worrying myself silly that everything was going to workout. Then at 8pm that evening we appeared on not one but two frequencies on the FM band... 90.9 and 93.9. Looking back, the opening broadcast did workout ok. The transmitters were stable, all the studio problems had been ironed out in advance and the station itself was widely heard. I would say the only thing lacking in what we were doing, was experience in this kind of radio.
Until this point, I had been programming for a number of radio stations, playing chart & dance music, or a mixture of both. Having previously worked in many nightclubs, I was used to hearing this non-sensical rubbish and at that point, it was really all I knew.
But I hadn't forgotten my own musical roots, growing up through the punk era and being tired out at school, due to staying up listening to John Peel 10pm - Midnight every night on my transister radio. Dont forget, this was a time way before the introduction of the internet in England. John Peel was probably the only source of discovering alternative bands & new music there was!
In brief, we remained as a pirate radio station until 2001. 15 glorious years on the FM dial. Then in 2002, I decided to go legal and took the show to a number of other radio stations. This is when it all started to happen.
35 years on and Starship Overflow has now been aired on over 50 radio stations worldwide in total.
The music format changed slightly in early 2005, as so much new music was arriving, it did'nt seem right to be playing old stuff anymore. Surely the airtime could be better used concentrating on promoting new music by the bands & artists that could'nt get airplay elsewhere? Seemed logical, so the decision was made.
So here we are, approaching 2022 and very much looking forward to all the new sounds the year will bring.
TUNE IN TO STARSHIP OVERFLOW'S SPECIAL 35TH ANNIVERSARY BROADCAST, TO HEAR A SELECTION OF SOME OF THE VERY FINEST NEW MUSIC SENT INTO THE STATION OVER THE LAST THREE & A HALF DECADES.
