Here at The Overflow we are in serious mourning, after learning of the death of Roy Skelton, the voice of Zippy and his trusty companion George. The children's tv show 'Rainbow ran for 20 years, between 1972 - 1992, Roy Skelton being a major player, ad-libing and creating havoc at times, with these two loveable puppets.
At around the age of 14, I discovered that I could impersonate the voices of Zippy and George and after a bit of practise, almost perfected them. I proceeded to get in to trouble at school regularly, shouting out wrong answers in the Maths lesson in an obnoxious Zippy voice, which soom became a pattern for other lessons too.
ZIPPY & GEORGE
When Overflow began in 1986, we used the two characters, re-naming them slightly as 'Zippy The Hippy' & 'George The Fairy'. Zippy's character was naturally that of an old burned out hippie, being a big Jimi Hendrix fan, though also incorporating all of Roy Skelton's great Zippy qualities, such as sulking when he did'nt get his own way, he knew better about everyhting in the universe than everyone else, he was very greedy and selfish, always had a bad attitude and not forgetting his favourite saying 'I'm a very good singer' (he was convinced of it)! George on the other hand, we purveyed as a complete exageration of Roy Skelton's character, making him even more of a pushover, more very nice and twee than ever before, a complete weed.... and of course we camped him up a bit, (to say the least), suggesting that he had a very close relationship with young Bungle bear!!!
OLD OVERFLOW POSTER FROM CHRISTMAS 1991 - POOR ZIPPY THE HIPPY HAD MEASLES - WHAT AN AWFUL FUSS HE MADE THAT YEAR!!!
Zippy & George were a big part of Overflow's programming through the early 90's, keeping the memory going for some years after Rainbow was axed from the tv schedule.
But let's not forget who we have to thank for all the times we were holding our sides laughing at Roy's wonderful characters. You can read all about the great Roy Skelton, by following the links below.
